Music & the Spoken Word
In December 2017, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Orchestra at Temple Square, and Bells on Temple Square joined with Broadway star Sutton Foster and world-renowned English actor Hugh Bonneville to celebrate both the joyful and peaceable moments of Christmas. With singers, instrumentalists, and dancers drawn from the local community, and festive flourishes from the Gabriel Trumpet Ensemble throughout the program, these concerts were a visual and musical spectacle, thrilling the combined capacity audience of over 60,000 in the Conference Center at Temple Square.
Hymns are powerful vehicles for carrying the gospel of Jesus Christ to the soul of the listener and for reinforcing messages of faith, belief, solace, hope, and encouragement. They are both sermons and testimonies, communal manifestations of faith when performed as a congregation and private comforts when recalled and pondered within the heart. The hymns represented here cover a range of gospel themes and modes of expression. The musical settings are joyful, contemplative, optimistic, thoughtful, and stirring, and the discerning arrangements serve to support and confirm the messages of each hymn.
The Mormon Tabernacle Choir has collaborated with some of the most legendary vocalists and performers over the years. For this album, the choir has assembled an unprecedented collection of recordings taken from standout performances over the past 15 years. Most of these performances were recorded live at the 20,000+ seat Conference Center in Salt Lake City. In addition, some real gems were uncovered or created specifically for this album, including a performance recorded live before millions of viewers at the start of the 2002 Olympic Games (Sting & Yo-Yo Ma performing "Fragile") and new recordings such as Amy Grant's "Thy Word," The King's Singers' "I'm Runnin' On," and Santino Fontana's "He Lives in You."
This new Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square recording of Handel’s Messiah relies on historical research and Baroque musical tradition to create a new landmark Messiah for our time. This Messiah Highlights version contains fourteen selections from the oratorio, including seven of the most familiar and beloved choruses and beautiful arias. Pieces that feature each of the acclaimed soloists are also presented.
